Information for our Christmas and New Year guests

by | Dec 13, 2015 | News

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch to ask how we fared during the floods last weekend. We spent the Saturday making sure the water from the fell went around and not through the houses and are pleased to say that personally we have not been adversely affected here at Manesty. Locally there are a few disruptions of which our guests who are visiting in the next month or so need to be aware:

  • The road north from Manesty is closed between Brackenburn (half a mile north of Manesty) and Gutherscale (about 2 miles north of Manesty). Therefore Manesty must be accessed via Grange and the main Borrowdale road, B5289, from Keswick. To ensure your sat navs take you on this route please use the post code for Grange, CA12 5UQ. Once in Grange continue for three quarters of a mile, all the way out of the village and through the trees. Manesty is on the left hand side once you come out of the trees. This is the usual way we go to Keswick.
  • The Greta Bridge in Keswick is now open, so access to Keswick is as normal.
  • The road from Keswick to Grasmere, A591, is closed south of Thirlmere, where the road has been washed away. We understand The Royal Engineers are currently working to provide a temporary solution here, but there is no indication of when the road may be opened again. Please ask us if you are interested in alternative routes from Keswick to Grasmere.
  • It is reported that there is no access to Whinlatter from Braithwaite, although we have not been to check ourselves.
  • Booths supermarket in Keswick is now open with a limited number (180) of core products on sale. There is also a free shuttle bus from Keswick to Booths in Penrith once an hour. The Co-op has opened a small pop up shop in the car park. Both shops aim to be fully open in the new year. It may be worth stopping on your way to Manesty to do your grocery shop in Penrith, where there is a Booths, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s. Alternatively, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda all deliver to Manesty and delivery vehicles are having no problems getting here.
  • Most of the smaller independent shops in Keswick which were flooded have reopened. Everything else is open as normal, expect for the Pencil Museum which was severely flooded and will reopen in 2016.
  • There is free parking for up to 3 hours in all Allerdale car parks in Keswick until after the New Year.
  • Fells and walking routes are open as normal, but you may still find a few bigger puddles or stream beds than usual!

For more information please have a look at the Keswick website, , or get in touch with us. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone and please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
